Technical data · Tests and calculation
Load table of the 1010 series joints tested in the laboratory, materials, indicative spans and real calculation examples for your project engineer.
For the engineer
This page gathers the data we send with our quotes for the structural design of a bolted steel structure with the StarModul system: materials, reference loads, the strength of the bolted joints of the 1010 series (tension, compression, shear and bending moments), the reinforcing fasteners, indicative spans, bracing and the failure tests.

General aspects and materials
The structure is analysed as a single 3D model. Secondary door and window sub-frames are left out of the global model (on the safe side) unless they are needed to place bracing such as X-bracing. The building is designed to meet the Spanish Building Code (CTE) and the structural and concrete standards in force.

Fasteners and bracing
The joints are reinforced with 6.3×25 self-drilling screws, which stop the members from separating under tension. Each screw provides 3.40 kN in shear with an additional safety factor of 3. Every joint has at least 2 fasteners on two of its faces, and most have 6 or more.
| Diameter (mm) | Tension (kN) | Shear (kN) |
|---|---|---|
| 4.8 | 9.34 | 6.58 |
| 5.5 | 12.50 | 8.95 |
| 6.3 | 14.45 | 9.40 |
Mechanical strength of the screw (core hardness 390 HV; surface 560 HV).
| 6.3 screw: sheet thickness (mm) | Pull-out resistance (kN) | Drilling time (s) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 9.85 | 2.8 |
| 5 | 12.30 | 3.4 |
| 6 | 14.50 | 3.7 |
Bracing is treated as tension-only ties: X-bracing with 40×4 flat bar or rigid tube members, placed in the façades where openings allow.
| Tensioner | M6 | M8 | M10 | M12 | M16 | M20 | M24 | M30 | M36 |

| Guaranteed tensile strength (kN) | 2.35 | 3.20 | 5.35 | 6.65 | 16.65 | 25.35 | 36.65 | 53.35 | 71.65 |
Indicative spans
Reference spans of the StarModul system with 100×100 tube and 200 mm omega section. They are indicative: every project is calculated.
| Element | Max. span (m) | Spacing (m) |
|---|---|---|
| Roof, tube at one level | 4.50 | 1.90 |
| Roof, tube at one level | 5.27 | 1.39 |
| Roof, tube at 2 levels | 3.00 | 3.00 |
| Roof, tube at 2 levels | 3.70 | 2.15 |
| Roof, tube at 2 levels | 5.30 | 1.50 |
| Roof, omega 200 | 5.36 | 1.65 |
| Interior floor, double tube | 5.27 | 1.00 |
| Floor, omega 200 | 6.50 | 0.50 |
For industrial buildings the tube-and-joint system reaches about 12 m span; for larger spans, up to about 20 m, we use bolted IPE steel buildings.
Finite element design (2026)
In 2026 two system joints with SHS 100×100×3 mm tube were checked by calculation with IDEA StatiCa Connection (component-based finite element method, EN 1993-1-8, 1-3, 1-1 and 1-5).
Two SHS 100×100×3 sections (S250) at 45° or 90°, with grade 8.8 fasteners. Maximum resistance for each action on its own (not combined, no moments):

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 45°, 3 bolts per line | 38.0 | 11.0 | 15.0 | 30.0 | 9.2 | 12.0 |
| 45°, 2 bolts | 33.0 | 10.5 | 12.5 | 20.0 | 8.5 | 9.2 |

| 90°, 1 bolt | 33.0 | 8.5 | 10.0 | 11.0 | – | 7.9 |
The reports study 4, 8 and 12 bolts in total per joint (1, 2 or 3 per line). Values valid only for the geometry, materials and layout studied.
Splice of two SHS 100×100×3 (S280) with an external 110×110×4 tube sleeve (S235) and 12 grade 8.8 M12 through-bolts (6 per side). Hinged joint (transfers axial and shear forces, not moments).
Failure tests
The 1010 series joints were tested to failure at the Laboratori d’Elasticitat i Resistència de Materials (LERMA) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in two campaigns: May 2017 (reports 46009) and October 2018 (reports 47008). Each test used two 100×100×2 mm tube specimens loaded to failure with a 100 kN load cell.
Each test has its load-displacement curve (tension and compression) or moment-rotation curve (bending about the y and z axes). These are the curves for each joint (click to enlarge).

Frequently asked questions
No. They are failure loads measured in laboratory tests with 100×100×2 mm tube and are indicative. The engineer of each project applies the safety factors and the applicable codes.
Yes. StarModul manages it with its engineer and quotes it separately: it is not included in the price of the kit or the joints.
DIN 933 grade 8.8 M10×20 bolts with self-locking nuts. Calculated structures also use M10 or M12 grade 8.8 bolts and 6.3×25 self-drilling reinforcement screws.
