How long have steel-framed houses been in use?

When it comes to houses in Europe, many people think of steel-framed houses as a relatively new concept in modern housing. However, what many people do not realize is that steel has been used as a housing construction material in Europe for more than 50 years.

Looking even further back, steel has been used as a building material throughout the world since before the 20th century. One of the first important uses of steel for construction was in railway stations. Later, the use of steel was extended to churches and other buildings. After World War II, the shortage of building materials such as wood led to the development of a steel wall framing system in Europe.

A look back in history shows that steel has reigned supreme in construction for more than a century. Today, steel is used worldwide for almost every possible construction application. Computer technology has made the cutting and prefabrication of steel structures for kit homes more cost-effective and versatile. The manufacturing technology of steel structures and trusses for prefabricated houses has caught up with that of wooden structures. Fastening systems, screws and nails for prefabricated houses have made the fabrication of steel structures easier, cheaper and more reliable.
